In 1707, the Act of Union meant that German merchants could no longer afford to trade in Shetland, due to the introduction of high duties on imported salt.

As the last of the German merchants left, this presented a commercial opportunity for the local merchants-lairds who acquired ships and started exporting fish to Europe.
